Golden Arrow Marine | Future Sea Defenders at Pokesdown Primary

15 June 2026

Teaching the Next Generation to Protect Our Seas

Golden Arrow Technologies was proud to visit Pokesdown Community Primary School as part of the Sea Defender initiative, helping to educate and inspire young people about the importance of protecting our oceans, coastlines, and marine life.

As a company deeply connected to the marine industry, we understand the importance of safeguarding the waterways and marine environments that so many people enjoy and rely upon every day. Through the Sea Defender programme, we had the opportunity to share practical ways children can make a positive impact on the environment, both locally and globally.

The visit focused on raising awareness of marine pollution, encouraging sustainable habits, and demonstrating how even small actions can help protect our seas for future generations.

Why Ocean Conservation Matters

The world’s oceans play a vital role in supporting life on Earth. They produce a significant proportion of the oxygen we breathe, provide habitats for countless species, and help regulate the planet’s climate.

Unfortunately, marine pollution continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing our oceans. Plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and litter can remain in the environment for decades, harming wildlife and damaging delicate ecosystems.

During our presentation, pupils learned how everyday items can have a long-lasting impact when they are not disposed of responsibly. For example:

  • A plastic bottle can remain in the environment for around 450 years.
  • An aluminium drinks can may take up to 200 years to break down.
  • Plastic bags can persist for decades, posing a threat to marine wildlife.

By understanding these facts, children can better appreciate the importance of reducing waste, recycling correctly, and keeping local environments clean.

Introducing the Sea Defender Challenge

A key part of the visit was introducing the Sea Defender Challenge, a series of simple but meaningful activities designed to encourage environmental responsibility.

The challenges included:

Pick Up 20 Pieces of Litter

A simple action that can make an immediate difference to local parks, beaches, and community spaces.

Tell a Friend Why Plastic Can Be Harmful

Education is one of the most powerful tools for creating positive change. Sharing knowledge helps spread awareness and encourages others to act responsibly.

Recycle a Bottle or Can

Recycling helps reduce waste, conserve resources, and prevent litter from entering waterways and oceans.

Visit a Beach and Leave It Cleaner Than You Found It

Beach cleans are a practical way to protect coastal environments while helping children understand the impact of litter on marine ecosystems.

Learn About Our Seas

Developing a greater understanding of marine life encourages future generations to value and protect the natural world.

These challenges were designed to show pupils that protecting the environment does not always require large-scale action. Small, consistent efforts from individuals can collectively create a significant positive impact.

Engaging Young Minds Through Marine Education

One of the most rewarding aspects of the visit was seeing the enthusiasm and engagement shown by the pupils throughout the session.

Children asked thoughtful questions about marine life, pollution, and how they could contribute to protecting the environment. Their curiosity highlighted the importance of introducing environmental education at an early age and empowering young people to become active participants in conservation efforts.

By connecting real-world marine issues with practical everyday actions, the Sea Defender initiative helps bridge the gap between awareness and action.

Golden Arrow Marine’s Commitment to the Marine Environment

At Golden Arrow Marine, our business is built around the waterways, coastlines, and marine environments that make the UK such a remarkable maritime nation.

While we support customers with industry-leading marine engines, propulsion systems, servicing, engineering expertise, and marine technology solutions, we also recognise the importance of supporting initiatives that help protect the future of our oceans.

Community engagement projects such as the Sea Defender programme provide valuable opportunities to encourage environmental stewardship and promote responsible behaviour among future generations.

We believe that education plays a crucial role in creating long-term positive change, and we are proud to support activities that inspire young people to care for the marine environment.

Thank You to Pokesdown Community Primary School

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff and pupils at Pokesdown Community Primary School for making us feel so welcome.

It was a pleasure to spend time with such an enthusiastic group of young people who were eager to learn more about our oceans and the actions they can take to help protect them.

We hope the Sea Defender Challenge inspires pupils to continue making environmentally conscious choices and to share what they have learned with their friends and families.
