Types of Marine Engines

Gasoline Marine Engines: Gasoline marine engines are the most commonly used type of engine in recreational boats. These engines are typically two or four stroke and can be found in a variety of sizes, ranging from small outboard motors to large inboard/outboard packages. They offer a number of advantages such as good power-to-weight ratio, low cost, and ease of maintenance. However, they do suffer from poor fuel economy and can produce high levels of pollutants in comparison to other types of marine engines.
Inboard Diesel Marine Engines: Inboard diesel marine engines have been gaining popularity over the past few decades due to their improved fuel efficiency and low emissions output. They usually provide higher torque at lower RPMs than gasoline engines, making them ideal for heavier vessels that require more power on demand. Additionally, they tend to last longer than gasoline models and require less regular maintenance. The major downside is their higher purchase price compared to gasoline alternatives.
Outboard Diesel Marine Engines: Outboard diesel marine engines provide an efficient alternative for smaller vessels such as fishing boats or dinghies where space is limited for an inboard engine installation. Generally speaking these motors are lighter than traditional gas outboards but still provide plenty of power when needed with greater fuel efficiency than their gas counterparts. However, they also tend to be more expensive upfront than gas models so careful consideration should be taken when deciding between the two options.
